School Council
The school council is a key part of our commitment to giving students a voice, fostering their understanding of democracy, and building a strong sense of community within the school. Our intention is to empower students by providing them with a platform to share their views, make decisions, and take ownership of their school experience.
To ensure students have a solid foundation in democratic principles, we hold elections in Spring Term 1, following our 'UK Parliament' drop-down day. This approach allows students to gain a better understanding of democracy and provides them with time to settle into the school year and build confidence. Elections are conducted for one representative from each year group. For students who may be apprehensive about putting themselves forward, staff will support the process by nominating candidates and ensuring opportunities are alternated among students to maximize participation.
The student council meets each half term, alongside members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), to provide feedback on the school environment and collaborate on decisions regarding clubs, extracurricular activities, and available resources. This ensures that student perspectives are heard and acted upon, with staff working to address the needs and suggestions of the student body.
Through the school council, we aim to cultivate a sense of ownership and pride among students, encouraging them to see the school as their community. Additionally, we hope to instil a lifelong appreciation for democracy and active participation at all levels, preparing students to become engaged and responsible citizens in the future.
