Admissions

Referral / Consultation Based Admissions

Apex Specialist Education operates a structured referral-based admissions process.

We accept referrals / consultations from professional bodies, specifically:

  • Local Authorities

  • Schools and academies

  • Education professionals acting on behalf of a Local Authority

We do not operate open public applications. All placements are made through professional referral processes to ensure suitability, safeguarding and appropriate support for each pupil.

Who We Support

Healey Learning Centre provides specialist education for pupils aged 11–16 (Years 7–11) who require a more personalised, supportive learning environment.

Pupils are typically placed through:

  • EHCP consultation processes, or

  • Alternative Provision placements commissioned by schools or Local Authorities

All placements are considered individually to ensure the provision is appropriate for the pupil’s needs, compatibility and educational pathway.

Expression of Intent to Refer

An expression of intent to refer is welcomed at any point during the school year.

Early discussion allows us to:

  • Understand the pupil’s needs

  • Consider suitability of provision

  • Discuss potential placement options

  • Plan visits or assessment where appropriate

There is no fixed admissions window, and referrals may be discussed at any time.

The Referral and Placement Process

Following a referral or consultation request, the school will:

1️⃣ Review available information and documentation
2️⃣ Consider whether the provision can meet the pupil’s needs
3️⃣ Discuss placement with referring professionals and parents/carers where appropriate
4️⃣ Arrange a visit or assessment if required
5️⃣ Confirm whether a placement can be offered

All decisions are made carefully to ensure placements are appropriate, safe and supportive for both the pupil and the existing cohort.

Working in Partnership

Admissions decisions are made in partnership with:

  • Local Authorities

  • Referring schools

  • Parents and carers

  • Relevant professionals

This collaborative approach ensures that placements are planned carefully and that pupils receive the right support from the outset.

Learning Centre Placement

Where a placement is agreed, pupils are allocated to the learning centre that best meets their needs, location and support requirements.

All learning centres operate within the same whole-school framework, ensuring consistent standards of education, safeguarding and support.
