Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing

Supporting Emotional Health Across the Whole School

At Healey Learning Centre, supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing is central to everything we do.

Many of the young people we support have experienced disrupted education, anxiety, trauma, or significant emotional challenges. We recognise that emotional wellbeing is essential for learning, development and long-term success.

Our approach ensures that pupils feel safe, understood and supported; both emotionally and academically, across all learning centres.

A Trauma-Informed Approach

Our practice is rooted in trauma-informed and relationship-centred principles.

Staff are trained to recognise how stress, anxiety and past experiences can affect behaviour, engagement and emotional regulation. We respond with calm, supportive and consistent approaches that prioritise safety, trust and connection.

This includes:

  • Predictable routines and safe environments

  • Low-arousal responses to distress

  • Relationship-based support

  • Structured regulation opportunities

  • Emotional literacy development

Our aim is to help pupils feel secure enough to re-engage, rebuild confidence and develop resilience.

Daily Emotional Support

Emotional wellbeing is supported through everyday practice across the school.

Pupils benefit from:

  • Trusted key adults

  • Regular emotional check-ins

  • Access to quiet or low-stimulus spaces

  • Support with regulation and coping strategies

  • Responsive pastoral support throughout the day

Support is personalised and responsive to each pupil’s needs.

Individual Support and Intervention

Where pupils require additional support, targeted interventions may be provided. These may include:

  • Individual pastoral support planning

  • Emotional regulation programmes

  • Mentoring and therapeutic-informed support

  • Behaviour and wellbeing monitoring

  • Coordinated support with families

Support is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and appropriate.

Working with Families and Professionals

We work closely with parents, carers and external professionals to support emotional wellbeing.

Where appropriate, the school may work alongside:

  • CAMHS and mental health services

  • Social care

  • Early help services

  • Therapeutic professionals

  • Local authority teams

This coordinated approach ensures pupils receive consistent and joined-up support.

A Consistent Approach Across Learning Centres

Mental health and wellbeing support operates within a unified whole-school framework across all learning centres.

Staff training, pastoral systems and support approaches are consistent across the provision, ensuring every pupil receives the same high standard of care regardless of location.

Promoting Positive Wellbeing

Alongside targeted support, we actively promote positive wellbeing through:

  • Supportive relationships

  • Structured and predictable environments

  • Opportunities for success and achievement

  • Personal development and confidence building

  • Recognition of progress and effort

Our goal is not only to respond to need, but to help young people develop the skills, resilience and self-belief they need for the future.

Our Commitment

We are committed to creating an environment where every pupil feels:

✔ Safe
✔ Understood
✔ Valued
✔ Supported

By prioritising emotional wellbeing, we help young people reconnect with learning, build resilience and move forward with confidence.
